Capsule Tower

Tall building atlas

As a studio, an atlas was written about various defining skyscrapers in history.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower was built in 1972 by Kisho Kurokawa in Tokyo. The 13 floors contain several offices, but mainly residential rooms. Kurokawa was a co-founder of metabolism and with this project he answers a central question of this movement.

The building consists of 2 independent cores, from which a total of 140 residential modules are suspended. One Module has the dimensions of 2.3m × 3.8m × 2.1m. It was planned to replace the capsules after about 25 years and bring them up to the latest technological standards, but this was unfortunately never done.

Due to poor condition and failed further development, the building was recently demolished.
